How it works
About this test
The ANA profile (ANA blot) checks for a group of specific antibodies against parts of your own cell nucleus, such as dsDNA, Sm, SS-A (Ro), SS-B (La), Scl-70 and Jo-1. Each antibody is linked with a particular autoimmune disease, so the pattern helps name the condition.
Why is this test done?
- Identify the type of autoimmune disease after a positive ANA
- Diagnose lupus, Sjögren's, scleroderma or myositis
- Investigate long-standing joint pain, rash or dry eyes
Symptoms — when should you get tested?
- Joint pain and swelling
- Rash on the face worsened by sun
- Dry eyes and dry mouth
- Fingers turning white or blue in cold
- Muscle weakness or long-lasting tiredness
Normal range
Reference ranges differ slightly between labs, methods, age and sex. Always discuss your report with your doctor.
If your result is high
A positive band for a specific antibody points towards the disease linked with it. Results are always read with symptoms and other tests.
Common reasons- Lupus (dsDNA, Sm, nucleosome)
- Sjögren's syndrome (SS-A, SS-B)
- Scleroderma (Scl-70, centromere)
- Myositis (Jo-1)
- Mixed connective tissue disease (RNP)

- 1Book online
Choose your slot for home collection or a visit to our centre.
- 2Blood sample taken
A trained phlebotomist takes a small blood sample from a vein in your arm with a sealed, single-use needle. It takes about 2 minutes.
- 3Tested in our lab
Your barcoded sample is tested on automated machines with strict quality checks.
- 4Report on WhatsApp
A pathologist checks the result and the report reaches you on WhatsApp and email.
