About this test

A Lipid Profile measures the fats in your blood — total cholesterol, triglycerides and HDL ("good") cholesterol, from which LDL ("bad") cholesterol is calculated. High cholesterol has no symptoms, so this test is the only way to know your risk of heart attack and stroke.

Why is this test done?

  • Check your risk of heart disease and stroke
  • Routine check-up from age 20 (every 4–6 years) or yearly if at risk
  • Monitor cholesterol-lowering medicines
  • People with diabetes, high BP or obesity

Symptoms — when should you get tested?

  • No symptoms usually — that is why testing matters
  • Family history of heart attack
  • Diabetes or high blood pressure
  • Overweight or inactive lifestyle
  • Smoking

Normal range

Total cholesterol < 200 mg/dL
Triglycerides < 150 mg/dL
HDL cholesterol > 40 mg/dL
LDL cholesterol < 100 mg/dL

Reference ranges differ slightly between labs, methods, age and sex. Always discuss your report with your doctor.

If your result is high

High cholesterol, LDL or triglycerides cause fatty build-up in arteries and raise the risk of heart attack and stroke.

Common reasons
  • Diet high in fried, fatty or sweet food
  • Lack of exercise and overweight
  • Diabetes or hypothyroidism
  • Family history (genetic)
  • Alcohol (raises triglycerides)

If your result is low

A low HDL ("good" cholesterol) is a risk on its own — HDL helps remove cholesterol from arteries.

Common reasons
  • Smoking
  • Lack of physical activity
  • Overweight
  • Uncontrolled diabetes
