About this test

Triglycerides are the most common type of fat in the body. Extra calories, sugar and alcohol are turned into triglycerides and stored in fat cells. High levels add to heart risk and, when very high, can cause pancreatitis.

Why is this test done?

  • Part of heart risk check
  • Monitor diabetes and fatty liver
  • Check the effect of diet changes

Symptoms — when should you get tested?

  • Usually no symptoms
  • Overweight, especially around the waist
  • Diabetes
  • Regular alcohol use

Normal range

Normal < 150 mg/dL
Borderline high 150 – 199 mg/dL
High 200 – 499 mg/dL

Reference ranges differ slightly between labs, methods, age and sex. Always discuss your report with your doctor.

If your result is high

High triglycerides increase heart risk; above 500 mg/dL they can inflame the pancreas.

Common reasons
  • Sugar and refined carbohydrates
  • Alcohol
  • Uncontrolled diabetes
  • Overweight
  • Some medicines

If your result is low

Low triglycerides are usually not a concern.
