About this test

ANA are antibodies that wrongly attack the nucleus of your own cells. The ANA test is the first screening test for many autoimmune diseases, especially lupus.

Why is this test done?

  • Screen for lupus and other autoimmune diseases
  • Investigate joint pain, rash or unexplained fever
  • Before ordering the ANA profile

Symptoms — when should you get tested?

  • Joint pain and swelling
  • Butterfly-shaped rash on the face
  • Mouth ulcers and hair fall
  • Long-lasting tiredness or fever
  • Fingers changing colour in cold

Normal range

ANA Negative

Reference ranges differ slightly between labs, methods, age and sex. Always discuss your report with your doctor.

If your result is high

A positive ANA means autoimmune antibodies are present. Many healthy people, especially older women, have a low-positive ANA, so results are read with symptoms.

Common reasons
  • Lupus (SLE)
  • Sjögren's syndrome
  • Scleroderma
  • Rheumatoid arthritis
  • Some medicines and infections
