About this test

Calcitonin is a hormone made by C-cells of the thyroid gland. Very high levels are a marker of medullary thyroid cancer.

Why is this test done?

  • Diagnose and monitor medullary thyroid cancer
  • Screen family members with MEN2 gene
  • Investigate a thyroid nodule

Normal range

Men < 8.4 pg/mL
Women < 5.0 pg/mL
