About this test

Karyotyping looks at all your chromosomes under the microscope to check their number and structure. It finds conditions caused by extra, missing or rearranged chromosomes.

Why is this test done?

  • Investigate repeated miscarriages (both partners)
  • Investigate infertility
  • Diagnose Down, Turner or Klinefelter syndrome
  • Investigate delayed growth or development

Symptoms — when should you get tested?

  • Repeated pregnancy loss
  • Difficulty conceiving
  • Short height or delayed puberty
  • Developmental delay in a child

Normal range

Women 46,XX
Men 46,XY

Reference ranges differ slightly between labs, methods, age and sex. Always discuss your report with your doctor.

If your result is high

An abnormal karyotype shows extra, missing or rearranged chromosomes. A genetic counsellor can explain what it means.

Common reasons
  • Down syndrome (trisomy 21)
  • Turner syndrome (45,X)
  • Klinefelter syndrome (47,XXY)
  • Balanced translocations causing miscarriages
