About this test

Cysticercosis is an infection with larvae of the pork tapeworm (Taenia solium), which can form cysts in the brain (neurocysticercosis), a common cause of fits in India. This test looks for IgG antibodies against the parasite.

Why is this test done?

  • Support diagnosis of neurocysticercosis
  • Investigate new-onset fits
  • Read with CT or MRI findings

Symptoms — when should you get tested?

  • Fits (seizures)
  • Headache
  • Lumps under the skin or in muscles
  • Vision problems

Normal range

Cysticercus IgG Negative

Reference ranges differ slightly between labs, methods, age and sex. Always discuss your report with your doctor.

If your result is high

A positive result shows exposure to the parasite; with brain scan findings it supports neurocysticercosis.
