About this test

DHEA-S is a male-type hormone made mostly by the adrenal glands. It helps find whether excess male hormones are coming from the adrenals.

Why is this test done?

  • Investigate excess hair growth or acne in women
  • Look into irregular periods and PCOS
  • Check adrenal gland problems
  • Early puberty in children

Symptoms — when should you get tested?

  • Excess facial or body hair
  • Acne
  • Irregular periods
  • Hair thinning on the scalp

Normal range

Women (20–40 yrs) 65 – 380 µg/dL
Men (20–40 yrs) 160 – 450 µg/dL

Reference ranges differ slightly between labs, methods, age and sex. Always discuss your report with your doctor.

  • Adrenal tumour

If your result is low

Low DHEA-S is common with age and may be seen with adrenal or pituitary failure.

Common reasons
