About this test

The Electrolytes Profile measures sodium, potassium, chloride and bicarbonate — minerals that control water balance, nerve signals, muscle and heart function, and the acid balance of your blood.

Why is this test done?

  • Check dehydration from vomiting or diarrhoea
  • Monitor kidney and heart patients
  • Check effects of BP medicines and diuretics
  • Find the cause of weakness or confusion

Symptoms — when should you get tested?

  • Weakness or muscle cramps
  • Confusion
  • Irregular heartbeat
  • Vomiting or diarrhoea
  • Swelling or high BP

Normal range

Sodium 135 – 145 mEq/L
Potassium 3.5 – 5.1 mEq/L
Chloride 98 – 107 mEq/L
Bicarbonate 22 – 29 mEq/L

Reference ranges differ slightly between labs, methods, age and sex. Always discuss your report with your doctor.

If your result is high

High electrolytes often come from dehydration or kidney problems. High potassium can affect the heart rhythm.

Common reasons
  • Dehydration
  • Kidney disease
  • Some BP medicines
  • Uncontrolled diabetes

If your result is low

Low sodium or potassium can cause weakness, cramps, confusion and heart rhythm problems.

Common reasons
  • Vomiting or diarrhoea
  • Diuretics (water tablets)
  • Drinking too much water
  • Heart or liver failure
