How it works
About this test
Gastrin is a hormone that tells the stomach to make acid. Very high levels may point to a gastrin-making tumour (Zollinger–Ellison syndrome).
Why is this test done?
- Investigate repeated or severe stomach ulcers
- Look for Zollinger–Ellison syndrome
- Check stomach acid problems
Symptoms — when should you get tested?
- Repeated ulcers not healing with treatment
- Severe acidity and burning pain
- Long-lasting diarrhoea
Normal range
Reference ranges differ slightly between labs, methods, age and sex. Always discuss your report with your doctor.
If your result is high
High gastrin can be due to acid-lowering medicines, low stomach acid or a gastrin-making tumour.
Common reasons- Acid-reducing medicines (PPIs)
- Atrophic gastritis
- Zollinger–Ellison syndrome
- Kidney failure
