About this test

HVA is a breakdown product of dopamine passed in urine. High levels can point to neuroblastoma, a childhood tumour, and some other nerve-tissue tumours.

Why is this test done?

  • Screen for neuroblastoma in children
  • Monitor treatment
  • Investigate some adrenal tumours

Symptoms — when should you get tested?

  • Lump in the belly of a child
  • Bone pain
  • Weight loss and fever

Normal range

Adults < 8 mg/g creatinine

Reference ranges differ slightly between labs, methods, age and sex. Always discuss your report with your doctor.

If your result is high

High HVA suggests a tumour making dopamine, such as neuroblastoma.
