About this test

IgG4 is one of the four IgG subclasses. Very high IgG4 levels are a clue to IgG4-related disease, a condition where organs like the pancreas, bile ducts and salivary glands become swollen and scarred.

Why is this test done?

  • Look for IgG4-related disease
  • Investigate swelling of pancreas, glands or bile ducts
  • Monitor response to steroid treatment

Symptoms — when should you get tested?

  • Painless swelling of salivary or tear glands
  • Jaundice without gallstones
  • Belly pain or pancreatitis
  • Swollen glands

Normal range

Adults 4 – 86 mg/dL

Reference ranges differ slightly between labs, methods, age and sex. Always discuss your report with your doctor.

If your result is high

A high IgG4 supports IgG4-related disease, though it can also rise in allergy and some other conditions.

Common reasons
  • IgG4-related disease
  • Autoimmune pancreatitis
  • Allergy and asthma
  • Some parasitic infections

If your result is low

Low IgG4 is usually not significant on its own.
