About this test

This profile measures LH, FSH and prolactin — hormones from the pituitary gland that control periods, ovulation, sperm production and fertility.

Why is this test done?

  • Find the cause of irregular periods or infertility
  • Evaluate PCOS
  • Check menopause
  • Male infertility

Symptoms — when should you get tested?

  • Irregular or missed periods
  • Difficulty conceiving
  • Milky breast discharge
  • Hot flushes
  • Low sex drive

Normal range

LH (follicular phase) 2.4 – 12.6 mIU/mL
FSH (follicular phase) 3.5 – 12.5 mIU/mL
Prolactin (women) 4.8 – 23.3 ng/mL

Reference ranges differ slightly between labs, methods, age and sex. Always discuss your report with your doctor.

If your result is high

High FSH/LH can mean menopause or reduced ovarian/testicular function; a high LH:FSH ratio is common in PCOS; high prolactin can block ovulation.

Common reasons
  • Menopause or low ovarian reserve
  • PCOS (high LH)
  • Stress, medicines or pituitary tumour (high prolactin)

If your result is low

Low LH/FSH can mean the pituitary gland is not signalling properly.

Common reasons
  • Pituitary or hypothalamus problems
  • Very low body weight or heavy exercise
