About this test

tTG IgA is the main blood test for celiac disease, where gluten (in wheat, barley and rye) damages the small intestine.

Why is this test done?

  • Screen for celiac disease
  • Investigate long-lasting diarrhoea or poor growth
  • Monitor gluten-free diet

Symptoms — when should you get tested?

  • Long-lasting diarrhoea or bloating
  • Weight loss or poor growth in children
  • Iron deficiency not improving
  • Mouth ulcers or itchy rash

Normal range

tTG IgA < 20 U/mL

Reference ranges differ slightly between labs, methods, age and sex. Always discuss your report with your doctor.

If your result is high

A high level strongly suggests celiac disease; a gut biopsy may confirm it.
