  • First test to check thyroid health
  • Adjust thyroxine dose
  • Screening in pregnancy

Symptoms — when should you get tested?

  • Tiredness
  • Weight change
  • Hair fall
  • Irregular periods
  • Feeling cold or hot all the time

Normal range

Adults 0.4 – 4.2 µIU/mL
Pregnancy (1st trimester) 0.1 – 2.5 µIU/mL

Reference ranges differ slightly between labs, methods, age and sex. Always discuss your report with your doctor.

If your result is high

High TSH means the thyroid is underactive (hypothyroidism).

  • Iodine deficiency
  • Thyroid medicine dose too low

If your result is low

Low TSH means the thyroid is overactive (hyperthyroidism) or too much thyroid medicine.

Common reasons
