About this test

Von Willebrand factor (vWF) is a protein that helps platelets stick together and form a clot. This study measures its amount and activity to diagnose von Willebrand disease, the most common inherited bleeding disorder.

Why is this test done?

  • Find the cause of easy bleeding or bruising
  • Investigate heavy periods
  • Check before surgery in people with bleeding history

Symptoms — when should you get tested?

  • Frequent nosebleeds
  • Heavy or long periods
  • Bleeding gums
  • Long bleeding after cuts, dental work or surgery

Normal range

vWF antigen 50 – 160 %
vWF activity 50 – 160 %

Reference ranges differ slightly between labs, methods, age and sex. Always discuss your report with your doctor.

If your result is high

High vWF is common in stress, pregnancy, inflammation and with birth control pills.

Common reasons
  • Pregnancy
  • Inflammation or infection
  • Exercise or stress
  • Hormone pills

If your result is low

Low vWF suggests von Willebrand disease and a tendency to bleed.

Common reasons
  • Von Willebrand disease
  • Blood group O (slightly lower levels)
  • Hypothyroidism
