About this test

Creatinine is a waste product from muscles that the kidneys remove from blood. It is the most commonly used test to check kidney function and to calculate eGFR.

Why is this test done?

  • Check kidney function
  • Monitor diabetes and high BP
  • Check before scans with contrast dye or certain medicines

Normal range

Men 0.7 – 1.3 mg/dL
Women 0.6 – 1.1 mg/dL

If your result is high

High creatinine means the kidneys may not be filtering properly.

  • Chronic kidney disease
  • Dehydration
  • Some painkillers and antibiotics
  • Very high muscle mass or supplements
