About this test

The drug allergy test checks your blood for IgE antibodies against commonly used medicines, such as certain antibiotics and painkillers. It helps find out which medicine may be causing allergic reactions.

Why is this test done?

  • Find which medicine caused a past allergic reaction
  • Plan safe medicines before surgery or treatment
  • Investigate rashes or swelling after taking medicines

Symptoms — when should you get tested?

  • Rash, itching or hives after a medicine
  • Swelling of lips, eyes or face
  • Breathlessness or wheezing after a dose
  • Fever with rash after starting a new drug

Normal range

Each drug Negative (< 0.35) kU/L

Reference ranges differ slightly between labs, methods, age and sex. Always discuss your report with your doctor.

If your result is high

A positive result for a drug means you have IgE antibodies to it and may react to it. Your doctor will advise avoiding it.

Common reasons
  • Allergy to penicillin-group antibiotics
  • Allergy to other antibiotics or painkillers
