About this test

Hypersensitivity pneumonitis is lung inflammation caused by breathing in things like mould, bird droppings or feathers again and again. This panel checks for IgG antibodies against Aspergillus fumigatus, pigeon proteins and Mucor mould.

Why is this test done?

  • Find the trigger of lung inflammation
  • Investigate breathlessness in bird keepers or people exposed to mould
  • Support diagnosis of interstitial lung disease

Symptoms — when should you get tested?

  • Dry cough
  • Breathlessness that slowly worsens
  • Fever and chills hours after exposure
  • Tiredness and weight loss

Normal range

Aspergillus fumigatus IgG Negative
Pigeon proteins IgG Negative
Mucor IgG Negative

Reference ranges differ slightly between labs, methods, age and sex. Always discuss your report with your doctor.

If your result is high

A positive result shows exposure and an immune response to that substance. With matching symptoms and scans, it supports hypersensitivity pneumonitis.

Common reasons
  • Keeping or feeding pigeons and birds
  • Feather pillows or quilts
  • Damp, mouldy homes or workplaces
  • Farm work with mouldy hay or grain
