How it works
About this test
The dual marker test is a first-trimester screening blood test done between 11 and 13+6 weeks of pregnancy. It measures free beta-hCG and PAPP-A and, with the NT scan, estimates the risk of Down syndrome and some other chromosomal conditions.
Why is this test done?
- Screen the baby for Down syndrome, Edwards and Patau syndromes
- Decide whether further testing (NIPT or amniocentesis) is needed
Symptoms — when should you get tested?
- Routine screening in every pregnancy
- Mother aged 35 or above
- Previous baby with a chromosomal problem
Normal range
Reference ranges differ slightly between labs, methods, age and sex. Always discuss your report with your doctor.
If your result is high
A "screen positive" (high-risk) result does not mean the baby has a problem; it means further tests are advised.
Common reasons- Higher chance of Down syndrome (trisomy 21)
- Higher chance of trisomy 18 or 13
