How it works
About this test
Most testosterone in blood is bound to proteins; only a small free part is active. Free testosterone gives a better picture of hormone activity, especially when binding proteins are abnormal.
Why is this test done?
- Check low testosterone in men
- Investigate excess hair, acne or irregular periods in women (PCOS)
- When total testosterone is borderline
Symptoms — when should you get tested?
- Low energy or sex drive in men
- Erectile problems
- Excess facial hair or acne in women
- Irregular periods
Normal range
Reference ranges differ slightly between labs, methods, age and sex. Always discuss your report with your doctor.
