About this test

PSA is a protein made by the prostate gland. The PSA test is used to screen for prostate problems, including prostate enlargement, infection and prostate cancer, in men usually over 50.

Why is this test done?

  • Prostate screening in men over 50 (or 45 with family history)
  • Check urinary problems
  • Monitor prostate cancer treatment

Symptoms — when should you get tested?

  • Weak urine flow
  • Frequent urination at night
  • Difficulty starting urination
  • Blood in urine or semen

Normal range

Men under 50 0 – 2.5 ng/mL
Men 50–60 0 – 3.5 ng/mL
Men over 60 0 – 4.5 ng/mL

Reference ranges differ slightly between labs, methods, age and sex. Always discuss your report with your doctor.

If your result is high

A high PSA needs further checking; it is often due to an enlarged or inflamed prostate, but can be a sign of cancer.

Common reasons
  • Enlarged prostate (BPH)
  • Prostate infection
  • Prostate cancer
  • Recent ejaculation or cycling
