How it works
About this test
The immunoglobulin profile measures the main antibody types in your blood — IgA, IgG and IgM, and here also IgG4. These antibodies fight infections. Levels that are too low or too high point to immune problems.
Why is this test done?
- Look for weak immunity in people with repeated infections
- Investigate raised blood proteins
- Check for IgG4-related disease
- Monitor some blood cancers
Symptoms — when should you get tested?
- Repeated chest, ear or sinus infections
- Slow recovery from infections
- Swelling of glands, pancreas or salivary glands
- Unexplained weight loss
Normal range
Reference ranges differ slightly between labs, methods, age and sex. Always discuss your report with your doctor.
If your result is high
High immunoglobulins usually mean the immune system is very active, or in some cases that one cell line is making too much antibody.
Common reasons- Long-standing infections
- Liver disease
- Autoimmune disease
- Multiple myeloma or other blood disorders
- IgG4-related disease
If your result is low
Low immunoglobulins mean the body may not be able to fight infections well.
Common reasons- Inherited immune deficiency
- Protein loss through kidneys or gut
- Some blood cancers
- Steroids or chemotherapy
