About this test

Pus examination looks at pus under the microscope using special stains, including the ZN stain for acid-fast bacilli (AFB). It helps find TB and other germs in abscesses and discharging wounds.

Why is this test done?

  • Look for TB in a cold abscess or discharging gland
  • Find germs in pus quickly
  • Guide treatment before culture results are ready

Symptoms — when should you get tested?

  • Swelling or abscess that keeps discharging
  • Swollen neck glands with pus
  • Wound not healing for weeks

Normal range

AFB (ZN stain) Not seen

Reference ranges differ slightly between labs, methods, age and sex. Always discuss your report with your doctor.

If your result is high

Finding AFB in pus strongly suggests tuberculosis of that site.

Common reasons
  • Tuberculosis of glands, bones or skin
  • Other acid-fast germs
