How it works
About this test
The quadruple marker is a second-trimester screening test done between 15 and 20 weeks. It measures AFP, hCG, unconjugated estriol and inhibin A to estimate the risk of Down syndrome, Edwards syndrome and neural tube defects.
Why is this test done?
- Screen for chromosomal conditions when first-trimester screening was missed
- Screen for neural tube defects like spina bifida
Symptoms — when should you get tested?
- Routine screening at 15–20 weeks
- Missed dual marker test
- Higher maternal age
Normal range
Reference ranges differ slightly between labs, methods, age and sex. Always discuss your report with your doctor.
If your result is high
A screen-positive result means a higher chance, and further tests such as a detailed scan, NIPT or amniocentesis may be advised.
Common reasons- Higher chance of Down syndrome
- Higher chance of trisomy 18
- Neural tube defects (high AFP)
