About this test

Rubella (German measles) IgG shows whether you are protected against rubella, either from a past infection or vaccination. Rubella in early pregnancy can cause serious birth defects, so knowing your immunity is important.

Why is this test done?

  • Check immunity before planning pregnancy
  • Part of the TORCH panel
  • Confirm response to the MMR vaccine

Symptoms — when should you get tested?

  • Planning pregnancy
  • Contact with a person who has rubella
  • Mild fever with a pink rash

Normal range

Rubella IgG Negative (not immune)

Reference ranges differ slightly between labs, methods, age and sex. Always discuss your report with your doctor.

If your result is high

A positive IgG means you are immune to rubella. This is a good result before pregnancy.

Common reasons
  • Past rubella vaccination
  • Past rubella infection

If your result is low

A negative IgG means you are not protected. Your doctor may advise the vaccine and waiting at least one month before trying to conceive.
