Why is this test done?

  • Look for recent rubella in pregnancy
  • Investigate fever with rash
  • Part of the TORCH panel
  • Check a newborn suspected of congenital rubella

Symptoms — when should you get tested?

  • Pink rash starting on the face
  • Mild fever
  • Swollen glands behind the ears
  • Joint pain

Normal range

Rubella IgM Negative

Reference ranges differ slightly between labs, methods, age and sex. Always discuss your report with your doctor.

If your result is high

A positive IgM suggests a recent rubella infection or recent vaccination. Your doctor may repeat the test or do further tests to confirm.
