How it works
About this test
This test detects IgM antibodies against the scrub typhus germ (Orientia tsutsugamushi). IgM appears in the first week of illness, so a positive result supports a current infection.
Why is this test done?
- Confirm scrub typhus in a patient with fever
- Find the cause of fever not explained by dengue, malaria or typhoid
- Start the right antibiotic early
Symptoms — when should you get tested?
- High fever with chills
- Severe headache and body ache
- A painless black scab (eschar) on the skin
- Rash, cough or confusion
Normal range
Reference ranges differ slightly between labs, methods, age and sex. Always discuss your report with your doctor.
If your result is high
A positive IgM points to a current scrub typhus infection, which responds well to early antibiotics like doxycycline.
Common reasons- Recent scrub typhus infection after a mite bite
