How it works
About this test
SGOT (also called AST) is an enzyme found mainly in the liver, heart and muscles. When these tissues are damaged, SGOT leaks into the blood. It is usually checked along with SGPT to assess liver health.
Why is this test done?
- Check for liver damage
- Monitor liver disease and its treatment
- Part of the liver function test
Symptoms — when should you get tested?
- Jaundice
- Belly pain on the right side
- Nausea and tiredness
- Heavy alcohol use
Normal range
Reference ranges differ slightly between labs, methods, age and sex. Always discuss your report with your doctor.
If your result is high
A high SGOT points to injury of the liver, and sometimes heart or muscles.
Common reasons- Fatty liver or hepatitis
- Alcohol-related liver damage
- Muscle injury or heavy exercise
- Some medicines
If your result is low
