About this test

SGPT (also called ALT) is an enzyme found mostly in the liver. It is the most specific routine marker of liver cell injury — when liver cells are damaged, SGPT rises in the blood.

Why is this test done?

  • Detect liver inflammation early
  • Monitor fatty liver and hepatitis
  • Check the effect of medicines on the liver

Symptoms — when should you get tested?

  • Jaundice
  • Tiredness and loss of appetite
  • Belly discomfort
  • Overweight or diabetes (fatty liver risk)

Normal range

Adults 7 – 56 U/L

Reference ranges differ slightly between labs, methods, age and sex. Always discuss your report with your doctor.

If your result is high

A high SGPT means liver cells are being injured.

Common reasons
  • Fatty liver
  • Viral hepatitis
  • Alcohol
  • Medicines such as some painkillers, TB drugs or statins

If your result is low

A low SGPT is normal and not a concern.
