How it works
About this test
TB DNA PCR looks for the genetic material (DNA) of Mycobacterium tuberculosis, the germ that causes TB. Because it copies and detects tiny amounts of DNA, it can find TB faster than culture, often within a day or two.
Why is this test done?
- Confirm suspected tuberculosis quickly
- Test samples where few germs are present
- Help diagnose TB outside the lungs
- Support the doctor before starting TB treatment
Symptoms — when should you get tested?
- Cough for more than 2 weeks
- Evening fever and night sweats
- Weight loss and loss of appetite
- Swollen glands in the neck
- Coughing up blood
Normal range
Reference ranges differ slightly between labs, methods, age and sex. Always discuss your report with your doctor.
If your result is high
A "Detected" result means TB germ DNA was found in the sample, which strongly supports active TB. Your doctor will decide treatment along with other findings.
Common reasons- Active tuberculosis (lungs, glands, bones or other organs)
