How it works
About this test
This test detects IgM antibodies against the Toxoplasma parasite. IgM appears soon after infection, so a positive result may mean a recent infection, which matters most in pregnancy.
Why is this test done?
- Look for recent infection in pregnancy
- Part of the TORCH panel
- Investigate fever with swollen glands
- Check babies suspected of infection at birth
Symptoms — when should you get tested?
- Swollen glands in the neck
- Mild fever and body ache
- Tiredness
- Often no symptoms
Normal range
Reference ranges differ slightly between labs, methods, age and sex. Always discuss your report with your doctor.
If your result is high
A positive IgM may mean a recent infection, but IgM can stay for months. Your doctor may order IgG avidity or a repeat test to confirm.
Common reasons- Recent toxoplasma infection
- Long-lasting IgM from an older infection
