Ceruloplasmin is the protein that carries copper in the blood. Low levels are a key sign of Wilson's disease, where copper builds up in the liver and brain.

Why is this test done?

  • Screen for Wilson's disease
  • Investigate liver disease in children and young adults
  • Investigate tremor or behaviour changes

Symptoms — when should you get tested?

  • Jaundice or liver problems at young age
  • Tremor or stiff movements
  • Mood or behaviour change
  • Brown ring around the iris

Normal range

Adults 20 – 60 mg/dL

Reference ranges differ slightly between labs, methods, age and sex. Always discuss your report with your doctor.

  • Infection or inflammation

If your result is low

Low ceruloplasmin suggests Wilson's disease or protein loss.
