About this test

Haemoglobin is the iron-rich protein in red blood cells that carries oxygen from your lungs to the rest of the body. This test measures how much haemoglobin is in your blood and is the main test to check for anaemia.

Why is this test done?

  • Screen for anaemia
  • Check the cause of tiredness or breathlessness
  • Monitor iron or vitamin treatment
  • Check-up during pregnancy

Symptoms — when should you get tested?

  • Tiredness and weakness
  • Pale skin, lips or nails
  • Breathlessness on small effort
  • Dizziness or headache
  • Cold hands and feet

Normal range

Men 13.0 – 17.0 g/dL
Women 12.0 – 15.0 g/dL
Pregnant women 11.0 – 14.0 g/dL
Children (6–12 yrs) 11.5 – 15.5 g/dL

Reference ranges differ slightly between labs, methods, age and sex. Always discuss your report with your doctor.

If your result is high

A high haemoglobin is less common and often happens when the body is short of water.

Common reasons
  • Dehydration
  • Smoking
  • Living at high altitude
  • Lung or heart disease
  • Rarely, polycythaemia (too many red cells)

If your result is low

Low haemoglobin means anaemia — your blood carries less oxygen, which makes you feel tired and weak.

Common reasons
  • Iron deficiency (most common in India)
  • Vitamin B12 or folate deficiency
  • Heavy periods or blood loss
  • Pregnancy
  • Chronic kidney disease or thalassaemia
