About this test

The Iron Profile measures serum iron, TIBC (total iron binding capacity), transferrin saturation and ferritin. Together they show how much iron is in your blood, how much is stored, and whether you have iron deficiency or iron overload.

Why is this test done?

  • Find the cause of anaemia
  • Confirm iron deficiency
  • Monitor iron treatment
  • Check iron overload

Symptoms — when should you get tested?

  • Tiredness and weakness
  • Pale skin
  • Breathlessness
  • Hair fall
  • Brittle nails
  • Craving for ice or mud

Normal range

Serum iron 60 – 170 µg/dL
TIBC 250 – 450 µg/dL
Transferrin saturation 20 – 50 %
Ferritin (men) 24 – 336 ng/mL
Ferritin (women) 11 – 307 ng/mL

Reference ranges differ slightly between labs, methods, age and sex. Always discuss your report with your doctor.

If your result is high

High iron and ferritin can mean iron overload, inflammation or liver disease.

Common reasons
  • Too many iron tablets or transfusions
  • Haemochromatosis (genetic iron overload)
  • Inflammation or infection (ferritin)
  • Liver disease

If your result is low

Low iron and ferritin with high TIBC means iron deficiency — the most common cause of anaemia.

Common reasons
  • Low iron in diet
  • Heavy periods or pregnancy
  • Blood loss from the gut
  • Poor absorption
