About this test

Platelets are tiny blood cells that stick together to stop bleeding when you get hurt. This test counts how many platelets are in your blood. It is especially important during dengue and other viral fevers, when platelets can drop quickly.

Why is this test done?

  • Monitor dengue and viral fevers
  • Find the cause of easy bruising or bleeding
  • Check before surgery
  • Monitor medicines that affect platelets

Symptoms — when should you get tested?

  • Easy bruising
  • Bleeding gums or nose bleeds
  • Tiny red spots on the skin (petechiae)
  • Heavy periods
  • Fever with body ache (dengue)

Normal range

Adults 1,50,000 – 4,10,000 /µL

Reference ranges differ slightly between labs, methods, age and sex. Always discuss your report with your doctor.

If your result is high

A high platelet count (thrombocytosis) is often a reaction to infection, inflammation or iron deficiency.

Common reasons
  • Infection or inflammation
  • Iron deficiency
  • After surgery or removal of spleen
  • Rarely, bone marrow disorders

If your result is low

A low platelet count (thrombocytopenia) increases the risk of bleeding. Below 20,000/µL needs urgent medical care.

Common reasons
  • Dengue and other viral fevers
  • Malaria
  • Some medicines
  • Liver disease or enlarged spleen
  • Bone marrow problems
