About this test

This rapid kit test checks for two common liver viruses together: hepatitis B (HBsAg) and hepatitis C (anti-HCV antibody). Both spread through blood and can cause long-term liver damage without symptoms.

Why is this test done?

  • Screen before surgery, dialysis or blood donation
  • Routine screening in pregnancy
  • Check people with jaundice or raised liver enzymes
  • Screen after needle-stick injury or unsafe injections

Symptoms — when should you get tested?

  • Yellow eyes or skin
  • Dark urine
  • Tiredness and loss of appetite
  • Often no symptoms at all

Normal range

HBsAg Non-reactive
Anti-HCV Non-reactive

Reference ranges differ slightly between labs, methods, age and sex. Always discuss your report with your doctor.

If your result is high

A reactive result means a possible hepatitis B or C infection. It must be confirmed with lab tests such as ELISA, viral load (PCR) and liver function tests.

Common reasons
  • Hepatitis B infection
  • Hepatitis C infection (current or past)
