How it works
About this test
HBV DNA PCR measures the amount of hepatitis B virus in your blood (viral load). It shows how actively the virus is multiplying and helps decide and monitor treatment.
Why is this test done?
- Decide whether to start hepatitis B treatment
- Monitor response to antiviral medicines
- Check risk of passing infection in pregnancy
Symptoms — when should you get tested?
- Known HBsAg positive
- Raised liver enzymes
- Pregnancy with hepatitis B
Normal range
Reference ranges differ slightly between labs, methods, age and sex. Always discuss your report with your doctor.
If your result is high
A high viral load means the virus is active and the risk of liver damage and spread is higher.
Common reasons- Active chronic hepatitis B
- Treatment failure or drug resistance
