How it works
About this test
Post-prandial insulin measures insulin in the blood about 2 hours after a meal. With fasting insulin and sugar values, it shows how strongly your pancreas responds to food and whether insulin resistance is present.
Why is this test done?
- Check insulin resistance in PCOS or prediabetes
- Investigate low sugar after meals
- Assess pancreas function
Symptoms — when should you get tested?
- Weight gain around the belly
- Dark patches on neck
- Irregular periods
- Shaking or sweating after meals
Normal range
Reference ranges differ slightly between labs, methods, age and sex. Always discuss your report with your doctor.
If your result is high
High post-meal insulin usually means the body needs extra insulin to control sugar, as in insulin resistance.
Common reasons- Insulin resistance
- PCOS
- Obesity and prediabetes
- Insulinoma
If your result is low
Low insulin after a meal means the pancreas is not making enough insulin.
Common reasons- Type 1 diabetes

- Pancreas disease
