Why is this test done?

  • Investigate jaundice
  • Tell liver or bile duct jaundice from other types
  • Simple screening for liver problems

Symptoms — when should you get tested?

  • Yellow eyes or skin
  • Dark yellow or tea-coloured urine
  • Pale stools
  • Itching

Reference ranges differ slightly between labs, methods, age and sex. Always discuss your report with your doctor.

If your result is high

Presence of bile salts and pigments suggests hepatitis or a block in the bile ducts.
