About this test

Lymphocytes are white blood cells (T cells and B cells) that fight viral infections and make antibodies. The absolute count gives the actual number per microlitre of blood.

Why is this test done?

  • Investigate viral infections
  • Check immunity in HIV or after chemotherapy
  • Look into abnormal CBC results

Symptoms — when should you get tested?

  • Fever with sore throat
  • Swollen glands
  • Frequent infections

Normal range

Adults 1000 – 3000 cells/µL

Reference ranges differ slightly between labs, methods, age and sex. Always discuss your report with your doctor.

If your result is high

High lymphocytes are common during viral infections; very high persistent counts need checking for blood cancers.

Common reasons
  • Viral infections (EBV, CMV, hepatitis)
  • Whooping cough
  • TB
  • Chronic lymphocytic leukaemia

If your result is low

Low lymphocytes can weaken the body's defence against infections.

Common reasons
  • Viral illness like dengue or COVID
  • HIV
  • Steroids or chemotherapy
  • Severe stress or illness
