About this test

Neutrophils are the most common white blood cells and the first defence against bacterial infections. The absolute neutrophil count (ANC) gives their actual number per microlitre of blood.

Why is this test done?

  • Find bacterial infection
  • Monitor patients on chemotherapy
  • Check infection risk when neutrophils are low

Symptoms — when should you get tested?

  • Fever
  • Frequent infections
  • Mouth ulcers
  • Slow-healing wounds

Normal range

Adults 2000 – 7000 cells/µL

Reference ranges differ slightly between labs, methods, age and sex. Always discuss your report with your doctor.

If your result is high

High neutrophils usually mean a bacterial infection, inflammation or stress.

Common reasons
  • Bacterial infection
  • Injury, surgery or burns
  • Steroid medicines
  • Smoking
  • Some blood cancers

If your result is low

Low neutrophils (neutropenia) raise the risk of serious infections. Below 500 is considered severe.

Common reasons
  • Viral infections
  • Chemotherapy or some medicines
  • Vitamin B12 or folate deficiency
  • Bone marrow problems
