About this test

Immunofixation electrophoresis identifies the exact type of an abnormal antibody (M-protein), such as IgG kappa or IgA lambda. It confirms and types an M-band seen on protein electrophoresis.

Why is this test done?

  • Confirm and type an M-protein
  • Diagnose multiple myeloma and related disorders
  • Confirm complete response to treatment

Symptoms — when should you get tested?

  • M-band on protein electrophoresis
  • Bone pain or anaemia
  • Kidney problems

Normal range

Monoclonal protein Not detected

Reference ranges differ slightly between labs, methods, age and sex. Always discuss your report with your doctor.

If your result is high

Detection of a monoclonal band confirms a plasma cell disorder and shows its type.
