How it works
About this test
MPV (mean platelet volume) is the average size of your platelets. Younger platelets are bigger, so MPV helps explain why the platelet count is high or low.
Why is this test done?
- Find the cause of low or high platelets
- Part of a complete blood count
Symptoms — when should you get tested?
- Easy bruising
- Bleeding gums or nosebleeds
- Abnormal platelet count
Normal range
Reference ranges differ slightly between labs, methods, age and sex. Always discuss your report with your doctor.
If your result is high
High MPV means more young platelets, often when the marrow is making platelets quickly to replace lost ones.
Common reasons- Platelet destruction (ITP, dengue recovery)
- Inherited large-platelet disorders
- Myeloproliferative disorders
If your result is low
Low MPV can be seen when the marrow is not making enough platelets.
Common reasons- Bone marrow suppression
- Aplastic anaemia
- Chemotherapy
