How it works
About this test
Serum protein electrophoresis (SPEP) separates blood proteins into bands to look for abnormal patterns, such as an M-spike seen in multiple myeloma.
Why is this test done?
- Screen for multiple myeloma and MGUS
- Investigate high globulin or total protein
- Monitor myeloma
Symptoms — when should you get tested?
- Bone pain
- Anaemia
- Frequent infections
- Kidney problems
Normal range
Reference ranges differ slightly between labs, methods, age and sex. Always discuss your report with your doctor.
If your result is high

Common reasons- Multiple myeloma or MGUS
- Chronic infection
- Liver disease
- Autoimmune disease
If your result is low
Low albumin or gamma globulin suggests protein loss or weak immunity.
Common reasons- Liver disease or malnutrition
- Kidney protein loss
- Immune deficiency
